PEOPLE with learning disabilities get the chance to speak up and speak out as their thought-provoking interactive show gets a public performance next week. Get Changed Theatre Company?s ?Freak Boy? will be performed at the Octagon Theatre, Okehampton College, next Wednesday, July 27, at 7pm. The show is being staged following a successful recent performance to students at Okehampton College. ?Freak Boy? tackles two important issues, bullying and disability awareness and has been developed by members of the company themselves. The show focuses on two main characters, Chris, a 12-year-old college student and Greg, an adult with learning disabilities who attends numeracy and literacy classes at the college. They are both victims of bullying, of being on the outside, humiliated and victimised by those who should know better. In the play, Greg is both the victim and the bully. The performance aims to show the adult with learning disabilities as a bully to get away from the stereotyped view of them as poor, innocent simpletons. The show poses a complex moral dilemma for the audience and encourages them actively to engage with the problem. Life is tough for Greg, labelled a loser and freak. Where would you place your anger? What would you do in the situation? The company has recently received money to support its work from Okehampton Round Table. Get Changed Theatre Company was formed ten years ago to give people from West Devon with learning disabilities the chance to learn, build confidence and share through the performing arts.
