The FAMOUS spectacle, the Callington poppy wave is back up for its third year.
The spectacular poppy wave consisting of around 9,000 knitted and crocheted poppies that were made by community volunteers in Callington was put up on Monday night (October 24) at St Mary’s Church with help from the Callington Fire crew. Volunteers and members of the Callington community turned up to see the poppy display go up at around 7pm on Monday to complete the poppy installation.
The volunteers had already put up poppy and leaf panels, placed poppy wreaths on lamposts, put crosses in the planters on Fore Street along with a new display in front of the toilets on New Road.
The fire crew climbed ladders to install the wreath and poppy wave to complete the display.
Aileen Moore from the Poppy Volunteer Group said: ‘Every year it surprises us how good it looks. We never have any damage done to any of the installation, it seems to be something that people respect and take care of. It will be up for four weeks and during that time people come from very far afield to see it.
Barbara, another member of the volunteer group echoed Aileen’s views and spoke of the unanimous support the group has had from the Callington community: ‘Lots of people in the town have helped and would drop poppies off, said Barbara.
‘It’s been a community effort. It’s lovely.’
The poppy wave will be illuminated to show support for The Poppy Appeal and The Royal British Legion until Remembrance Sunday.
