PUPILS from Princetown Primary School joined Dartmoor Speedwatch and local police officers last Tuesday morning (January 21) in order to monitor traffic through their village.
Eight children from the school stood with officials outside the village church as part of their ‘eco project’.
Emma Byrom, head of school, said: ‘The children have been really driven in organising how they want to encourage the school and members of the public to be more aware of the environment. They have been involved in litter picking, turning off lights around the school and helping creatures in the natural habitat around the school.
‘One of the 10 areas of the eco project is “transport” and the children (completely independently) wrote to Gregg Manning, a volunteer of speedwatch, to ask if they could join in. The children would love to do more work on reducing the amount of cars on the road and to encourage more children to walk to school.’
Mr Manning added: ‘We had been contacted by the children who asked if they could join us to see what we did and how we did it.
‘The children were very excited when watching the speed gun and were correctly identifying the vehicles that passed us, although only one was actually speeding.’
