A PLANNING application which may have paved the way for a new pub in Tavistock?s West Street has been withdrawn. John Taylor, of Wessex Heritage, confirmed the A4 change of use application for the former Hockridge and Stacey retail unit and the Kevin Cooper?s outlet in West Street, which is owned by Mr Taylor, has been withdrawn. He has now submitted an A3 application to West Devon Borough Council, which if approved would give change of use consent for the retail units to be converted to a restaurant. Mr Taylor said he had never intended the two shop units should become a pub. ?If you apply for A4 use, you automatically get A1, 2 and 3 for the same money. I thought it would be simpler to go for A4, to give the widest possible choice for marketing the units,? he said. ?I never wanted a pub there. I am trying to market the unit but at the end of the day it has to be something satisfactory ? I?m not going to stick a load of rubbish in there.? Mr Taylor said he was currently in negotiations regarding future use of 82, 83 and 84 West Street but could not yet confirm any more details regarding the site. Meanwhile, pub chain J D Wetherspoon, which did look at the West Street premises, this week confirmed it is actively pursuing a site in the town. Wetherspoon?s press spokesman Eddie Gershon said: ?We are looking at one particular site which is a retail unit. We are in the process of finding out whether the vendors would agree to sell to the company.? Mr Gershon said he could not at present confirm the location of the site under investigation.
