FOLLOWING six years of intensive fund raising and building work the Bishop of Plymouth, the Rt Rev Nick McKinnel, joined parishioners at St Peter’s Church Lamerton for a well attended service of re-dedication.

Mr McKinnel officiated with the assistance of Lamerton’s vicar the Rev Andy Atkins.

Over £40,000 has been raised locally. Together with grants from a number of funding bodies, over £200,000 has been raised for extensive repairs to be undertaken to the tower and the east gable end.

The church has also been able to refurbish the rainwater and improve drainage. Many in the congregation have been highly involved with fundraising.

The most visible feature of the restoration in the church is the mural on the west wall depicting major events in the life of St Peter.

Plaster was removed from the west wall as it was falling away and dangerous. Following re-plastering with lime mortar, artist Jon Minshull was commissioned to paint the mural. In order to allow the mortar to breathe it had to be done with special clay paints. The church will be left open during November so that anyone can come to see it.
