A WELL-used community skate park in Callington has had a refurbishment costing more than £20,000 to ensure the long-term safety and enjoyment of its users.
After being closed on and off for nearly a year due to repairs needed, Callington Town Council was delighted to reopen the skate park at the Recreation?Ground recently after deciding to undertake a full refurbishment of the equipment rather than just do the repair work.
Town clerk Helen Dowdall said: ‘It is with much excitement and delight to confirm that the skate park has been fully refurbished and is now open again.
‘The town council made the wise decision not to complete the repairs needed but instead make a long-term decision to do a thorough refurbishment instead.
‘The council committed over £20,000 to the project which we feel is money well spent.
‘The skate park is a prime location for children after school and it is right next to the free car park.
‘The council is fully aware that the equipment is regularly used by many young people and it is brilliant that we could put money towards this worthy cause and hope the young people are pleased with our efforts.’
The council has also extended its CCTV coverage of the recreation ground to better ensure the safety of those using the park and the skate park and to catch acts of anti-social behaviour and vandalism which has plagued the area in the past.
Helen added: ‘Now with the increased CCTV coverage of the park, parents can be assured of their children’s safety and any acts of vandalism or anti-social behaviour will be caught and we will work with the police to deal with it.’
The skate park is used daily by young people from the primary school and by youngsters whose parents are waiting for other children at after school clubs, as well as people of all ages from the town and surrounding area.
