A TAVISTOCK-based dentist is one of only six in the UK to pass the inaugural Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh Diploma in Implant Dentistry.

After months of studying, Dr McVeigh — affectionately known by many Devon patients and friends as 'Paddy' — had to sit exams for more than three days, with written papers, case presentations and an oral examination.

Earlier this year he was nominated for the national Dentist of the Year award. A key factor in this was a glowing testimonial from a West Country patient who was involved in a helicopter crash while on honeymoon at the Grand Canyon in Arizona.

Dr McVeigh 'rebuilt' his mouth after the partial destruction of eleven teeth in the horrific accident.

The dentist, who has run the Abbey Mead Dental Practice in Plymouth Road, Tavistock, with his co-dentist wife, Ann for the last 12 years, has a special interest in state-of-the-art dental implants and full mouth reconstruction of badly-broken teeth.

The 42-year-old former Royal Marine and naval dentist said: 'It was an extremely tough set of exams, but well worth the effort. The benefits can be seen daily through the satisfied smiles of our patients.

'The considerable financial investment, as well as the time and effort, were made possible by the tremendous support I have received from my patients, practice team and family. I couldn't have done it without them.'

Dr McVeigh and his Tavistock practice team came away with the 'People's Award for Patient Care' from the national awards ceremony at London's Lancaster Gate Hotel.

Anthony Clarke, the victim of the USA helicopter crash lives in Poole, Dorset but, after Dr McVeigh was recommended by a friend, he made regular 250-mile round trips for treatment at the Tavistock surgery.

Mr Clarke said: 'It was worth it to have such a high-calibre dentist. Paddy's time and dedication have proven invaluable. The crowns and subsequent treatment have ensured that my teeth are now restored to a level where I have regained my self-esteem and feel confident eating.'

Dr McVeigh was also one of the first in the country to pass the membership of the Joint Dental Faculties Royal College of Surgeons England examination in 2007.

His wife, Dr Ann Cummins, said: 'Our team is very proud of Paddy. He has worked exceptionally hard and now has more qualifications on paper to support his excellent clinical skills. He can really give you the smile you always wanted.'

The couple , who live on the outskirts of Tavistock, have two young children. When not working Paddy is a keen trout and salmon fisherman.
