COTEHELE House in East Cornwall will be hosting a very special event this weekend, when it celebrates the 100th birthday of Lady Hilaria Gibbs, née Edgcumbe, daughter of the late 6th Earl of Mount Edgcumbe. Lady Hilaria, who now lives with her daughter in Plymouth, was 100 years young yesterday (Wednesday) and friends and family from around the world will be coming together on Sunday to celebrate this remarkable achievement. Charmian Saunders, visitor services manager at Cotehele, said: 'Lady Hilaria is a wonderful lady. She frequently visits us at Cotehele and regales us with memories of when she and her family lived here. 'Her recall is fantastic and the staff and volunteers at Cotehele always look forward to her visits. We feel privileged to host her birthday party here in the great hall and barn restaurant on Sunday'. Cotehele was the home of the Edgcumbe family from 1353 until 1947 when the 6th Earl suggested to the Treasury that Cotehele House and its estate of 1,300 acres should be passed to the National Trust in lieu of death duties. Cotehele became the first historic house and estate to be acquired by the Trust through the National Land fund. Cotehele was mainly built between 1485 and 1560 and was a home of the Edgcumbe family for nearly six hundred years. Its collection includes indigenous tapestries, original furniture and armour.
