LIFTON Community Centre was celebrating recently, after receiving a cash boost from Waitrose in Okehampton. The centre was awarded a cheque for £360 from the Waitrose Community Matters Scheme. Presented by Sonia Kelly at the Okehampton store, representatives from the centre and Devon County Councillor Kevin Ball, received the cheque which will form part of the funding package needed to build a much-needed multi-use community hall in the village. The community centre team is about to submit its stage two lottery application, and will know within four months whether it has got through to the third and final stage for funding. Tony Phillips, chairman of the community centre committee, said: 'Support from businesses such as Waitrose and ultimately their customers who chose our project over two other worthy causes really makes a difference to our fundraising. 'It demonstrates to organisations such as the Lottery that local people really want this community centre and are prepared to vote for it. 'After nearly twenty years in the development and planning we are really gaining momentum and things are starting to snowball.'
