OKEHAMPTON Golf Club on Saturday September 29 saw a field of 140 players for the annual men's invitation day.

Each member of Okehampton plays with their guest from another club in a four-ball better-ball medal competition.

The weather was kind, considering the recent gales, and the winners with a fine net 59 were Andrew Smallridge and his guest Tony Jeffs from Stover Golf Club.

Full results: 1, A Smallridge, T Jeffs (Stover), 59; 2, John Birch, P Rodgers (Crediton), 60; 3, S Carver, K Galvin (Crediton), 61; 4, J Mansell, K Pering, 61; 5, R Powell, D King, (Teignmouth), 61.

The following day the weather produced strong winds and rain for the penultimate round of the North Devon League. Eleven teams from the north of the county came to Okehampton with six players per team.

The best three scores from the six counted and, understandably, scoring was difficult, with only one player, P Davies, of Pormore, breaking par with an excellent 42 points.

Team results: 1, Saunton, 155; 2, Ilfracombe, 148; 3, Okehampton 146; 4, Royal North Devon, 144; 5, Libbaton, 142.

This result leaves Saunton Golf Club with one remaining fixture at Torrington in two weeks.
