Tamar League BUCKLAND winning the toss had no hesitation in batting first on a superb belter of a wicket. As was expected it turned out to be hard work for the bowlers of both teams to stamp any authority on the game with the batsmen dominating from start to finish. Buckland openers Pike supported by Bennett pushed the innings along at a fair rate playing sensible cricket and putting away anything slightly short of a length. With 10 overs gone a healthy 50 was on the board before Bennett fell to Folley caught by Sutton. Danger man Rogers signalled his intent with a six as soon as he arrived at the crease, but mercifully for the Ordulph his stay was brief thanks to Mills with a regulation take by keeper Chappell. Pike was still pushing the run rate along with support from Barrett (25) and then from Savage (24*) allowing Buckland to reach their 100 shortly after the 20th over. If the Ordulph were going to keep Buckland to a score under 250 they were going to have to remove Pike soon. A bowling change with Bridgewater bringing himself on from the school end was soon creating problems for Pike with his swinging pace. After a couple of near misses Bridgewater eventually got his man, clean bowled. This was an excellent 86 from Pike and proved to be the backbone of the Buckland innings. With Bridgewater bowling a good tight line and length the Ordulph were now able to keep the Buckland run rate to a moderate level and eventually their innings came to a close on 215 for 6. Buckland would probably have felt this was 40 or 50 light of what they would have liked. The Ordulph innings got underway in much the same manner as Buckland?s with again the batsmen calling the tune. Westlake in particular rode some early luck to really punish the Buckland attack with one of his customary belligerent big hitting sprees smashing a rapid 61. Westlake was supported well initially by Wellard and then by Evans with a nice 28. The wickets of Wellard to Harris and Evans to Holdsworth brought some hope to Buckland but thanks to Westlake the Ordulph were ahead of the required run rate. Eventually Westlake fell to a nice Yorker from Barrett but by this time the damage was done. At the crease now was seasoned veteran Chappell with Rotton. With some sensible batting Chappell, who never looked in trouble, steered Ordulph home with an accomplished 63 not out. Rotton also in his first match for the Ordulph finished with an unbeaten 22. This was a great result for the Ordulph who have never beaten Buckland before, and proves what they are capable of when they can get their strongest team out. Ordulph Taverners CC 1st XI won by 6 wickets. Next week Ordulph entertain Holsworthy at Kelly College.
