CALLINGTON College’s annual dance festival, now in its 11th year, returned to the stage recently.

BTEC, GCSE and A Level dance students from All Saints Plymouth, Looe Community Academy and Newquay Tretherras joined Callington Community College’s dance students from years 9-13, totalling 150 participants.

The day began with a high-energy Zumba workshop planned and led by sixth formers in the Dance Academy at the college.

There were four different workshops, including Bollywood by Kay Crook, aerial dance by David Greeves, improvisation and choreography by Suzie West and technique and performance by Emily Dobson. These workshops were thoroughly enjoyed by all and provided all the participants with lots of ideas and techniques to use in their dance coursework.

In the evening there was a performance, with pieces from all four schools. Callington was also joined by professional dance company Spindrift and for the first time Suzie West had created a piece that involved students from all four schools performing together.

Suzi Groom, acting subject leader for dance at Callington College, said: ‘The whole day was an absolute success, the students were truly inspired by the professional dance artists and I have never seen so many smiley faces in one day!’

l THIRTY three sixth form students and four members of staff from Callington Community College were involved in an exciting and first-of-its-kind cross curricular project involving art, textiles, photography, film and media studies.

Students travelled up to London and were able to explore a range of galleries, museums and influences across the capital to aid them with their A level courses and coursework. Some students even became pieces of art themselves.

In the evening of their first day, while making their way to see Spectre at the Empire Imax in Leicester Square, they were lucky enough to catch glimpses of the actors and director of the latest Hunger Games instalment — there were quite a few starstruck teenagers and teachers in the crowd.

The students thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to visit London and work across different disciplines.
