MEMBERS attending the annual meeting of Okehampton Rugby Club had the pleasure of hearing president Stan Friend report on what had been a particularly good season both on and off the field.

The two senior sides have both achieved promotion, (in the case of the second XV for the second consecutive season), while, at times, displaying rugby of superb quality.

The colts also enjoyed another season of outstanding rugby, partly rewarded by five of their squad appearing for Devon. The revival of the third 15 was a very encouraging aspect, and for this team an extensive set of fixtures is in place for 2009-10.

As usual the junior section goes from strength to strength, providing sport for around 200 youngsters each Sunday during the season. This is a huge operation stretching facilities to the absolute limit. Without the co-operation of North Tawton RFC it would be impossible to operate on such a large scale.

The junior section has been given full accreditation by the RFU for its excellence. High standards throughout the club are attributable to good coaching under the expert direction of Brett Luxton and his team.

There is no limit to what can be achieved by players who have the ability and dedication to reach the top of the game. Evidence of this is demonstrated by ex-Okehampton player Julian White, who recently passed the 50 cap mark for England and has appeared for the British Lions.

Off the field the treasurer Toby Daniel reported a successful year with all income streams bringing in increased revenue. In particular club sponsors have proved invaluable, making it possible for the club to consider future growth.

The chairman Robert Barkwell confirmed that much of the success was a direct result of the large grant from the Okehampton United charity. This grant made it possible to carry out badly needed restoration and renovation work to the clubhouse and changing facilities.

Overall the club is going through a period of revival bring much to look forward to in the coming season.

2009-10 marks the 125 year anniversary of the club's existence. Special events are being planned and it is hoped that next season's annual meeting will present another encouraging, optimistic picture for the future.

In appreciation of his tireless efforts for the club, Robert Barkwell was awarded life membership status.
