SOUTH Zeal modern pentathlete Sarah Gomersall has enjoyed a summer of success representing Great Britain at the Junior European and World Championships. In June in her first competition at this level, Sarah was a member of the GB team that won gold in the team relay and bronze in the team event in the European Championships in Montepulciano-Chianciano, Italy. Sarah finished a creditable 12th individually; she still has another two years competing in this age group. In July, competing in the Junior World Championships in Moscow, Great Britain won gold in the team event, beating the host nation by four points in an exciting competition. Sarah finished 22nd individually. Former Okehampton College students Sarah and twin sister Laura have just completed their first year at Bath University and are both on the Talented Athletes Programme at the Bath Centre of Excellence. Both girls have represented Great Britain at modern pentathlon at Youth B and Youth A. Laura won silver team relay medal at the 2004 European Championships in Portugal. She is just returning to competing following injury this year. Having just moved into the Junior (under 21) category where Great Britain have a number of strong athletes, Sarah did not expect to be selected in her first year at this level. Following good performances in selection competitions, second place in the British Modern Pentathlon Championships, Junior Women, and a brilliant record breaking points total in becoming British Universities Champion earlier this year, she forced her way into contention and has justified her selection in the team. The girls became involved in modern pentathlon (run, swim, shoot, fence and ride) as a result of competing in tetrathlons (run, swim, shoot and ride) for the Mid Devon Pony Club. Laura, Sarah and Jess Trerise (also ex Okehampton College) are competing in the Irish National Pony Club Tetrathlon Championships in August having been invited as current UK National Team Champions. The girls are dedicating their performance in this competition to the memory of the Mid Devon Pony Club tetrathlon team manager, Pip Bugg who died suddenly recently. Pip was due to accompany the girls on this trip. Pip and husband Patrick have been instrumental in the girls? success over the years, culminating in being crowned National Team Champions last year.
