TAVISTOCK Area Support Services is looking for volunteers to help make a difference to local people. TASS is the major provider in Tavistock and surrounding area of services for people over 55 with mobility problems or who are socially isolated. Funding for these services are usually raised annually and go to run the central core of TASS. But extra funding is needed as the amount of money raised annually became less over the years due to a lack of volunteers. Three years ago the Friends of TASS was formed to concentrate on community events with the object of raising funds and forming partnerships with other community charities. The group now takes part in regular events, including Tavistock Carnival, Goose Fair, and Aladdin's Cave, as well as its own spring and winter fayres. But its major achievement is organising the Tavistock Charity Bonanza at the pannier market, which brings together between 20 to 25 local charities. The 2007 event will take place on Saturday, June 30. Brian Podmore, chairman of the Friends of TASS, said: 'Volunteering can be good for you no matter your age or even fitness. Do consider even a couple of hours per week helping others.' For more information visit the Volunteer Bureau or The Anchorage Centre, both in Tavistock. l More than 120 people attended a Christmas bazaar last Saturday at the Anchorage Centre. The event included a raffle and a sale of cakes, jams, jewellery and cuddly toys. A total of £700 was raised from the event – every penny will go into the centre's fund to continue providing support for local over 55s.
