THE latest efforts of the Mid Devon Hunt Pony Club?s Junior Girls? Tetrathlon team were dedicated to the memory of Pip Bugg. The youngsters defended their title and trophy as Champions of Areas 15 and 16 last weekend, with Charlotte Rowe of the Mid Devon also retaining her individual title. The team of Charlotte Rowe, Lucy Almond and Jessica Mortimore had been determined to do well, ever since hearing of the unexpected death of their much loved trainer, Pip Bugg, just a week before the competition. ?Pip has put so much time and effort into our training, and made it such fun. She really wanted us to come here and defend our title, so we thought we?d better do it for her, and for Patrick, Pip?s husband, who is also heavily involved in training the team,? said a spokesperson for the pony club. ?We knew we were putting extra pressure on ourselves, especially with only three of us in the team, but we really wanted to do it.? It was a closely fought competition, and the Mid Devon girls all showed a great deal of determination in tackling the hilly run before going on to ride three excellent clear rounds on a course which caused a lot of problems ? indeed the Mid Devon was the only team with all its riders to go clear. The shooting on Sunday morning was when they probably missed Pip the most, as she would always be there with last minute advice, and calming words. However, they all shot well, with Jessica showing a huge improvement on her last outing. The team then proceeded to excel in the swimming pool, with Lucy achieving a personal best, and Charlotte matching her own personal best. On August 18, this team, plus Rosa Malseed, will travel to Warwickshire to compete in the National Tetrathlon Championships, for which they qualified a fortnight ago, just before Pip?s untimely death. ?She was so excited for us all, and so looking forward to it. We?re training hard and aim to compete very much as a team, and do our best,? said the spokesperson.
