WITH Remembrance Day edging closer, a member of Okehampton's branch of the Royal British Legion has shared why he feels wearing the poppy is important.
The RBL's poppy appeal is the organisation's biggest fundraiser, and was launched nationally on October 24. This year, the RBL is focusing on the range of work it does to support armed forces families, whether they are families of personnel on active service, of those currently in transition from military to civilian life, or of veterans.
Peter Williams, secretary of the Okehampton branch of the RBL, said: 'As an ex-serviceman, I know how important it is for a serving soldier to feel that his job is valued by the public. Wearing the poppy once a year is just one way to demonstrate my support for the service community.
'The poppy represents the suffering caused by wars and conflicts. Thus, my wearing it serves as a reminder to the community that people care.
'It is a way of giving thanks for the sacrifices of our forefathers so that we can lead the comfortable lives of today. It is also a symbol of my commitment to upholding the aims of the Royal British Legion.'
