AROUND 5,000 revellers at Chagstock enjoyed two days of great music and glorious weather last weekend — one of the largest events staged in the area this year.

Held on open fields at Whiddon Down, the family-friendly festival ran through a sun-filled weekend, with festival goers getting in the mood by dressed in circus gear as part of the festival theme.

This year's festival had a strong line up, with the Boomtown Rats, Billy Bragg, the Mystery Jets, Kathryn Roberts and Sean Lakeman, Willie and the Bandits, and Ferocious Dog among those who played.

The Boomtown Rats made their only 2013 UK festival headline performance at the festival on Saturday, performing shortly after Billy Bragg brought his blend of political rock to the stage.

Crowds also got to enjoy performances from Friday headliners Mystery Jets, Dizraeli and the Small Gods and many more.

Festival organiser Si Ford said: 'I think the Boomtown Rats summed it up perfectly when they said they had a stonking time. It was a brilliant weekend, we had the weather, we had the people, we had the bands. It was amazing.

'It is hard to pick out one highlight, but having Sir Bob Geldof and the Boomtown Rats on Dartmoor and at Whiddon Down was special.

'All the bands over the whole weekend were fantastic, with lots of great performances and no prima donna antics.'

Si expressed his thanks to the Chagstock volunteers, who made the festival possible with their help setting things up, running the event and disassembling things after the festival has finished.

Behind the scenes, close co-operation between the festival organisers and West Devon Borough Council helped the event run smoothly. Months before the festival, the council liaised on issues including noise, licensing, and water supply to the site.
