THE Devon and Cornwall Rail Partnership's popular Tamar Valley Line Carnet ticket scheme celebrated its tenth birthday last week. Introduced in June 2004, Tamar Valley Line Carnets are discounted books of ten tickets for travel between Tamar Valley communities and Plymouth, sold at participating local shops and post offices along the route. Around 30,000 journeys a year are made using Tamar Valley Line Carnet tickets, around one sixth of the annual total for the line. Tracey Boniface, owner of one of the Carnet retailers, Pearce's service station in Drakewalls, said: 'We have been selling the tickets here right from the start. 'We are very proud of our vital local railway and have been really happy with the way the scheme has grown.' Rebecca Catterall of the Devon and Cornwall Rail Partnership said: 'The Carnets have helped increase passenger numbers on the Tamar Valley Line by more than 50 per cent. 'Carnets have proved popular because of their flexibility and ease of use and the fact that the tickets are sold in local shops and post offices in the Tamar Valley.'
