'FOLK on the Moor', the Sunday Night folk club, continues to go from strength to strength at its new home,The Moorland Hotel on Dartmoor at Wotter, close to Shaugh Prior.
The Club meets at 8pm and is open to all.
September sees the start of a remarkable set of guest nights, Sunday brings an evening with Paul Downes, a Devon-based multi-instrumentalist and singer. Paul infuses his work with dazzling musical technique, but many people remember him for his deliciously quirky sense of humour.
October 8 sees the welcome return of Cath Mundy and Jay Turner. These two split their time touring between Europe and Australia; so this night provides a rare chance to see contemporary song writing performed to the highest level.
A fortnight later a truly distinctive female vocal trio — Hen Party — visit the Moorland Hotel. Here, too, are a group of performers who sprinkle their music with charm, wit and warm banter.
All other Sundays not listed are Singers Nights where performers are always welcome. There's a terrific array of local talent on offer on these occasions such as Den and Ned Couch, Plymouth based recording artistes, Ben Campbell, much loved Geordie singer/songwriter; Graham Searle, poet and storyteller; Hanging Johnny, the best shanty crew in the South West, and so many more.
November 5 sees something very special, a concert by the virtuoso husband and wife team of Chris Newman and Maire Ni Chathasaigh. Chris's sparkling guitar work, touched with jazz and blues influences, is widely admired and Maire's harp playing is both elegant and passionate. November 19 heralds the return of an old favourite of 'Folk on the Moor' Sara Grey, singer and musician from the USA. Her voice charms the hardest of hearts and her pithy wordplay never fails to raise a smile.
So find your way to Wotter on a Sunday night at 8pm and see for yourself that live music is a vital and vibrant life force.
