THE Salvation Army in Tavistock is appealing for toys for children whose families struggle for cash at Christmas.
Major Dawn McGarvey said: ‘Through my involvement with the Tavistock Foodbank I know that many families are struggling week by week and the extra expense of Christmas is overwhelming.
‘Families are referred to us by local organisations who know the families and their circumstances. It’s sad that local people are in need of this help.’
To help with the toy appeal, St Eustachius’ Church is holding a toy service on Sunday November 29 at 9.45am. New unwrapped toys would be gratefully received.
Second hand or cuddly toys will not be accepted. Other churches through Tavistock Area Churches Together are helping in a number of other ways this year.
Dawn added: ‘Last year we were able to provide for over 70 children and feel there could be many more that need our and your help.
‘We are also partnering with a Tavistock toy shop; they will hold a list of suggested toys. They will also keep donated toys to pass on to us, for those who cannot take them to the church.
Monetary donations can be sent to The Salvation Army, c/o 3 Town Mill Gardens, Tavistock PL19 0JG.’
Dawn also said that it is with regret that because of various circumstances and illness, the group was unable to hold their carols for the community service this year.
