THE Okehampton Golf Club Junior team won their division for the second year running with a 4 1/2 to 1 1/2 victory at home to Tiverton on Monday 28 August. They faced Fingle Glen in the League play off final on Sunday to try and go one better than last year when they lost to Exeter at the same stage. It was a pleasure to see such a wonderful standard of golf from both teams. All the matches were close with only one match with more than 1 hole between them at the halfway 9th hole. The second half saw Okehampton gradually pull away. Jonny Rattenbury was the first home with a 4-2 win. Next it was Lawrence Waldron with an outstanding 7-5 win. Olly Kirby was home next with a 4-3 win. Dan Curtis lost so the pressure was on the team captain Rachel Spry who was one down on the 15th, and Adam Clarke 2 up on the 13th. Rachel played a true captain?s role and turned her match around to win 2 up, courtesy of a wonderful approach to the 18th, an 8 iron to 6 inches from the pin, which gave her the deciding win. But Adam Clarke wouldn?t be denied his victory and won 3-1. All the team were a credit to the club in their standard of golf and their courtesy. The team will now compete in the South West Regional Final of the Junior Team Championship at Saunton on October 4. The club?s Saturday competition was the Charles Pedrick Shield, a fourball better ball medal.
