HUNDREDS of intrepid walkers turned out of cosy beds to face a rainy morning last Sunday to take part in the annual Abbot?s Way Walk.
More than 450 people, including 300 youngsters, arrived at Buckfast Abbey for a 7.30am start to the 25-mile walk which runs from the 19th century Benedictine Monastery to Tavistock College.
Organised by Tavistock and District Youth Network, the walk saw checkpoints stationed across the moor to account for walkers as well as four Red Cross first aid stations.
Local organisers spent the day doing safety checks from a minibus and acted as a pasty delivery service to keep walkers sustained.
The last trekker reached Tavistock College at 7pm after a 12-hour hike with all finishers reportedly thankful to rest tired toes.
The money raised from the walk will be used to boost youth organisations in the area. For more information on activities for young people contact the Youth Office at Tavistock College on 01822 613522.
