TAVISTOCK and District Outdoor Education forum ran a very successful 49th Abbot's Way Walk at the beginning of October.
Some 400 people in 72 teams entered and walked from Buckfast Abbey across the moor via Princetown to Tavistock, finishing at the Adventure Centre at Kelly College. The route was originally used by tradesmen travelling between the two market towns of Buckfastleigh and Tavistock.
It is a challenging route as there are no well defined paths or route marks. Originally stone crosses and marking stones would have marked the route but only a few of these remain.
Five local teams entered, two from Tavistock ATC, one from Tavistock Youth Cafe and two from Kelly College.
The Tavistock Youth Café team included three Tavistock College students Harry Fox, year 11, Ollie Jerrett and Jack Hopwood from year 10, who took part in the walk to raise funds to enable young people to take part in outdoor activities throughout the year.
On October 7, 2012 the event will celebrate its 50th birthday. Anyone who entered in 1962 or who has photos of the event from the early 1960s can email [email protected]">[email protected]
