FIREFIGHTERS from Bere Alston swapped their safety helmets for bike helmets recently, riding to each fire station in the moorland hub in a fundraising challenge.
Seven crew members, including a member from Tavistock and the moorland hub station manager, saddled up to ride from Bere Alston Fire Station, to Yelverton station, to Princetown station, to Tavistock station and back to Bere Alston.
The cycle ride was to raise money for the Fire Fighters’ Charity and the Bere Alston Recreational Parks fund.
Firefighter Robert Tremblett said: ‘It took us just over two and a half hours — we weren’t doing it as a race so it was quite enjoyable. A few of us are keen cyclists but we all have to keep up a certain level of fitness. It was nice to ride together as a team — we had the perfect weather for it.
‘The money raised will be split 50/50 with the Fire Fighters’ Charity and Bere Alston Recreational Parks. We wanted to do something for the community as well as raise funds for fire fighters.’
