Whitchurch v Yealmpton

ON a sunny, but breezy day at Yealmpton, Whitchurch maintained their excellent recent form. Having lost the toss, Whitchurch were invited to bat first.

The wicket was lively with a varying bounce, a feature of the match. Losing an early wicket made Buster Credicott come to the crease. He started dispatching the ball to all parts of the ground on his way to 83, and was well supported by Mansfield (20) and Gray (26).

Last week?s hero, skipper Chappell, was out first ball, sportingly walking after being caught behind when there had been no appeal from the opposition.

Towards the end of the innings Clapham and Jackson maintained Credicott?s momentum, Clapham finishing with 46 no and Jackson 28no. Whitchurch declared on 237 for 5.

In reply, Yealmpton were up against it with in-form fast bowler Pat Mills showing how to exploit the indifferent bounce. He was backed up by veteran Lavis.

With wickets falling at regular intervals due to tight bowling supported by some excellent catching, the victory never looked in doubt. Only Keen (41) showed any resistance.

The early damage was caused by the energetic Mills who finished with 4-39.

The best spin bowler in Devon came on and Bray soon had two wickets as he was almost unplayable on this wicket, finishing with 2-9. Jackson again bowled well and deserved his figures of 4-20 clearing up the tail.

Yealmpton were all out for 92, enabling Whitchurch to pick up another 20 points and return to the top of the league.

This week Whitchurch are home to Cockington.
