PEOPLE of all ages in West Devon and who are confident swimmers might like to have a go at a sport with a difference. Okehampton Water Polo Club, who meet once a week for training and coaching at the town?s Parklands Leisure Centre on Sunday evenings, is looking for new members to dive in and give their sport a try or go along and voice their support in club matches. The club has a broad cross section of members varying in ability and age. It has a mixed team (men and women) who play friendly matches with clubs in Devon and Cornwall. On Sunday, June 24, Okehampton WPC has a friendly match lined up against Bodmin from 6pm to 7.30pm at the Parklands Leisure Centre. There is a viewing balcony for people to come and watch what should be an entertaining match with Okehampton keen to restore pride after our last contest ended in victory for Bodmin. David Bowles, the secretary from the club, said: ?We are keen to further strengthen and develop our junior contingent and are looking at running junior only sessions if enough interest is expressed from the local community. ?The club will be running a ?taster? session for younger members as part of the ORCA Sports Week in July. The session will be on Sunday, July 15 starting at 6pm in Okehampton swimming pool. If you fancy giving it a go come along and try it. ?Also Okehampton WPC are looking to encourage people with learning or physical disabilities to come along to specific sessions and try water polo and we will hopefully have more news to follow on this later this year. ?The club is keen to introduce some local competitiveness with other Okehampton sporting teams by offering interclub water polo games with rugby, football, hockey. netball teams. If any of these teams would like to try a different sport please contact the club chairman Richard Corkill, on 07773 321836. ?All are welcome to come along and try out water polo, training sessions are at the Parklands Leisure Centre in Okehampton on Sunday evenings between 6pm and 7.30pm. ?The first session is free and no experience is necessary, though you should be a confident swimmer.?
