POLICE are appealing for witnesses following a four-car crash on the A30 near Okehampton on Sunday in which an elderly woman died.

The woman, named by police as Mildred Ferguson from Preston, who was in her early 70s, was a passenger in the Ford Focus being driven by her son, Richard Ferguson from Stoke Climsland in Cornwall, who suffered head injuries.

The accident, in which six other people were also injured, occurred on the eastbound carriageway at South Tawton dip at 9am.

The carriageway was closed for more than three hours and there were several miles of tailbacks as police set up diversions.

Three road ambulances, Devon Air Ambulance and fire crews from Okehampton and Chagford attended the scene.

Police confirmed that Mrs Ferguson died at the scene but her son's injuries were not believed to be life-threatening. Others who suffered minor injuries have been released from hospital.
