THE ladies of Yelverton are playing some excellent golf.
The county championships were played at Thurlestone on April 26 and 27. Laura Eastwood reached the semi-finals, Gilly Jarvis won the Jose Bruce Trophy for the second best scratch round of the competition, and Belinda McSherry won the plate competition.
Laura and Gilly are both playing in the English ladies' closed amateur competition which takes place between May 21 and May 25 at St Enodoc Golf Club. This competition is not often played in the South West and will be well worth a day visit for supporters.
Thirty-three ladies competed in the medal competition which was played at Yelverton on May 2. The silver division was won by Gilly Jarvis with a net 75, June Smalley was second with a net 75 and Di Friend was third with a net 77.
On May 9, 30 ladies competed in the postponed April medal competition. Kay Creaven won the silver division with a net 70; Shirley Trevena was second, also with a net 70, and third was Gilly Jarvis with a net 72. Georgie Evans won the bronze division with a net 71; Pat Gove was second with a net 78 and third was Lilias Strachan with a net 81. Laura Eastwood and Gilly Jarvis both did a hole in two shots.
The bronze division was won by Evelyn Dyche with a net 75, Penny Hunter was second with a net 77 and Pat Gove was third with a net 79. Lilias Strachan was the only player to do a hole in two shots.
A Still Cup match was played against Torquay, at Torquay on April 29. The match was halved, with excellent wins from Laura Eastwood, Gilly Jarvis and June Smalley, and Marie Watson halved her match.
Another Still Cup match was played on May 10 away against Thurlestone. Yelverton won 6-1, with wins by Laura Eastwood, Gilly Jarvis, Belinda McSherry, Karen Friendship, Caroline Theyer and Dawn Bolt.
A Sheelagh Creasy match was played against Teign Valley at home on April 29 when Yelverton Ladies won 5-2, with wins from Georgie Evans, Pat Gove, Helen Harris, Julie Percy and Pat Taylor.
The bronze open competition held at Yelverton on April 25 was won by E Devetta, of East Devon, with 39 points, second was C Caunter, of Okehampton, with 39 points, third was S Wing, of Wrangaton, with 35 points and fourth was G Evans, of Yelverton, with 33 points.
Belinda McSherry and Laura Eastwood won their first round match of the Daily Mail foursome competition against Elfordleigh. Their next round match is against Thurlestone to be played at Yelverton.
On May 6, Laura Eastwood and her father Karl won the Douglas Bader greensome with 43 points. Two other couples had the same score, but Laura and Karl won with 25 points on the back nine holes.
