Christmas fair at Hatherleigh Market’s new home

Listen up, folks - it's the update we've all been waiting for!

Hatherleigh Market is getting ready to move to its brand new purpose-built home in the new market quarter this December.

We’re hard at work putting the finishing touches on our shiny new market hall, meaning we will soon be able to accommodate up to 30 indoor stalls, plus a cafe. Alongside this we have an outdoor market square which will accommodate up to an additional 60 traders. We also have a purpose-built ‘Fur & Feathers’ building and we're looking forward to bringing back poultry and general auctions in the new year.

Starting in December, the regular Tuesday market will move from the Hatherleigh Community Centre to the new market building. We also plan to launch a new Saturday farmer’s market and Sunday car boot sale, as well as hosting a variety of different events throughout the year.

Don't forget to join us on December 6 and 7 for our two day Christmas fair, where we will have a fantastic mix of traders selling locally made crafts, gifts, food and drinks, plus so much more.

Keep an eye on our Facebook page for regular updates: www.facebook.com/hatherleighcommunitymarket/

Keep Christmas local with Tavistock BID

Tavistock at Christmas is a truly special place to be. From Dickensian Evening to the Christmas Tree Festival plus a host of markets and events, this Christmas it’s all about being local.

Tavistock’s Dickensian Evening is the most anticipated evening of the year - a magical late-night shopping event that transports you back in time. From 5pm on December 6, the streets fill with crowds coming to enjoy the sights and sounds of an old-fashioned, traditional Christmas experience.

2024 will kick off with a Lantern Parade around the town centre, with the Christmas lights formally switched on at 5:45pm.

Shoppers can experience Christmas under our beautiful lights and win a number of fantastic prizes from local businesses for doing so. Sounds pretty good to us! Amid the cost-of-living crisis and people turning to the internet more readily for their gift and everyday purchases, the message here in Tavistock is simply that the True Spirit of Christmas is not found online but right here in your town centre. Here you can enjoy a festive shopping experience like no other, one you can’t find with the click of a mouse!

Here are some reasons why shopping locally is where it is at this festive season:

  • It is sustainable – local products mean less air miles!
  • Supporting local businesses helps them support other local businesses and keeps the money in the local economy supporting local jobs.
  • Shopping online doesn’t necessarily save you money.
  • You can get most of what you need right here in the town centre.
  • It’s a festive experience that is fun and is real.

Taking part could earn you one of three lovely prizes – a meal for four at Taylors Bistro, an Air Fryer from Towl’s of Tavistock and a local produce hamper. For full details / terms & conditions see www.visit-tavistock.co.uk/spirit-of-christmas

Virtuoso British guitarist, Alexandra Whittingham, joins the Plymouth Symphony Orchestra

alexandra whittingham
Alexandra Whittingham. (Plymouth Symphony Orchestra )

November 24, Public Hall, Liskeard at 17:30 or November 27, St Andrew’s Plymouth at 19:30.

This programme begins with Verdi’s exciting overture to The Force of Destiny - a popular work with themes of fate, love, and tragedy woven throughout, reflecting the turbulent story of the opera itself.

The first of three French works is Debussy's La Mer - three symphonic sketches, capturing different states and moods of the sea through impressionistic textures and innovative harmonies.

Ravel's Alborada del Gracioso is a vibrant, Spanish-inspired piece marked by rapid, rhythmic guitar-like figures and playful, whimsical melodies in the spirit of a morning serenade.

Continuing the Spanish feel, the orchestra will be joined by guitarist Alexandra Whittingham for Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez. This timeless concerto, written in 1939, brought Rodrigo great fame and today is a very popular work in the virtuoso guitar repertoire. Alexandra has performed extensively across the world, recognised by The Guardian as ‘a young 21st-century virtuoso’. She is known for her expressive playing, unique interpretations and diverse repertoire.

The final work is Ravel’s hypnotic and well-known Bolero, which features a relentless, repeating rhythm building in power and complexity achieving an almost trance-like crescendo.

The Plymouth Symphony Orchestra is a vibrant community ensemble known for performing classical and contemporary works. Engaging local audiences, it showcases talented musicians and promotes music appreciation in the Plymouth area.
