Yelverton Golf Club is already among the five best in Devon and the top 100 in the country -– now it’s improving even more with a new-look catering team.
Good quality food is an important aspect of the golf clubs’ offering as golfers members and non-members often see the ‘19th hole’ as key to a successful golf club operation. The club prides itself on its food and how it supports social events and general hospitality for playing and social members and visitors and guests alike. The catering team has been restored to full strength with the addition of new Head Chef Dave Rundle formerly from Elfordleigh Hotel and Chef Jake Thorne also a new recruit who joins Yelverton Golf Club from the Dartbridge Inn at Buckfastleigh. They both join existing colleague Lei Davey. Head Chef Dave said “It was great to be offered the position as it was a Head Chef and I was keen to work in an establishment that was already recognised for its catering.
The friendly atmosphere throughout the club and working with Jake and Lei is just the ‘icing on the cake’ and I am looking forward to contributing to the catering service”The team are now looking at refreshing the bar menu which is available all day ensuring that it reflects the popular member choices as well as adding a couple of chef specials. One mainstay is the club’s famed YGC (Yelverton Golf Club) Club Sandwich – comprising bacon chicken mayo and fried egg in three layers of toast with salad and fries.
Another popular item is Sunday roast which is being relaunched under the new catering team.Club General Manager Lance Doggart said: “I’m really pleased to welcome Jake and Dave to the Yelverton Golf Club team. They are excellent chefs with a wealth of valuable and relevant experience and I’m confident they will continue our tradition of offering a varied menu with traditional home-cooked style food. The clubhouse is our 19th hole and the catering is an important asset to any golf club so it is great to have a new kitchen team with new menu ideas to add to the whole golfing experience. The new guys have joined Lei who is a specialist in oriental dishes and she supports our Chinese New Year celebration with many new dishes for us to taste. Catering is vital to support our hospitality events such as weddings and birthdays and celebrating lives. Our hospitality is very important to our reputation and we are very proud of this aspect of the club. We have a very bright future with our excellent new catering team who are keen to refresh and improve our existing offer.”
The golf club attracts top county competitions such is the quality of its course and level of hospitality. It has a full range of membership from longstanding members ladies youth and students to a growing junior section. The junior section is fast developing with coaching and competitions for boys and girls. Attracting junior members ensures the club’s future and develops a family atmosphere in the clubhouse. The adult members also enjoy a varied social programme ranging from quizzes bingo nights and food themed nights to a murder mystery evening which usually includes good food all coordinated and organised by Mollie Hawking assistant manager and Alisha West bar and catering manager.
