A COLONY of Bere Alston Trekkers (BATs) 'flew' to Wales on Saturday to taking part in the Trail Marathon Wales.
The 26 mile/42km and half 13mile/21km race routes were set in the stunning trails and tracks of the world-renowned Coed y Brenin forest in the Snowdonia National Park. Taking part in these challenging events were 19 Bere Alston Trekkers - five in the full and the remainder in the half - who had chosen the event for this years club trip.
Both routes guaranteed an experience that Bats would not forget, with 360 panoramic views from Rhobell Fawr to the Rhinogau, and constant changes in the terrain underfoot and the types of trail followed - forest road, tarmac, public footpaths, technical single-track).
Both routes were exceptionally hilly with the half marathon having a 2.250 ft overall gain and the marathon a 2.500 ft gain. First Bat home in the marathon was Nathan Newton who ran a truly memorable event and first Bat home in the marathon, and 4th lady overall was Rebecca Mingo. Making his marathon debut was Alen Guy. Bats had two visiting runners running as Bats for this event Adam Holland who finished in 12th position overall. Lai-Yin Wong and Marcia Macey from Plymouth Harriers, also joined the trip as well as Simon Fuller.
Every single Bat ran their very best and made the club proud. Runners would like to thank their supporters who stood in the rain, clapped and cheered for most of the day: Laura and Isla Newton, Kathryn, Ellie and Mia Guy, Eric Newton and Wendy Richardson.
