Chagford firsts v

IT was a good day for Chagford cricket as both first and second teams totalled more than 300 runs in their 45 overs of their Devon League Games.

The first team in their West Devon derby with Yelverton  batting first  scored 321 for 8 and were indebted to Divan Marais with 169.

Chagford lost an early wicket when James Fulner was caught off Sam Campbell for a duck. Marais, though, partnered by Ben Hancox, smashed the ball around the big ground, took part in a stand of 128 to advance the score to 130 before Hancox was out for 27.

Jon Wright weighed with a quick fire 31.  It was then the turn of skipper Del Lammonby to join Marais in a partnership of 85 before Marais was finally caught with the score at 279, with his highest score for Chagford at 169. Wickets then fell at regular Intervals and Lammonby was last out for an aggressive 63 and Chagford finished at 321-8.   For Yelverton, whose bowlers stuck to the task, Richard West finished with 4-78 and Patrick Hobbs 2-51.

Yelverton, in reply, lost an early wicket when Luke Julyan went for a duck with the score at 15 but it was then the turn of the Chagford bowlers to suffer as Yelverton chased a victory.   Geoff Brain and Christain Van Niekerk batted beautifully to both make 52, but both were out by the time the  score was at 115. West followed without score and Richard Grove for 9.  However, Anis Zubar stood firm and with Marc Glover looking in control it looked as though Yelverton could reach this difficult target.   However,  Glover was well caught for a hard hitting 46 and Zubar was finally out for 35.

Ben Parson made 23 not out and Yelverton in valiant attempt for the runs finished on 249 for 9 to give Chagford victory in a thrilling encounter and well done to these two West Devon Sides, but the game was much closer than the scores may suggest.    Liam Gardner 3-35 and Duncan Manners-Chapman 3-18 were the main Chagford wicket takers.
