Stokeinteignhead v Yelverton firsts
YELVERTON Bohemians lost the toss and were put into bat by home team Stokeinteignhead on a rain affected day. Worries that early wickets would fall were quickly put to rest as openers Anis Zubair and Patrick Hobbs pushed the score board along to a 50 run partnership.
The partnership was ended when Zubair was victim to a sharp caught and bowled by Chris Presst for 16. The next wicket came just four runs later when opener Hobbs was caught off the bowling of Mark Russell in an effort to close in on his 50, falling just six runs short.
New batsmen captain Richard West and Richard Townsend set about consolidating the innings with the score on 62-2. The next break for the home side came when West was bowled by Hugo Longrigg for 34; shortly after, Townsend succumbed to the same fate having scored 38.
Some powerful hitting from Pete Lojszczyk motored Yelverton on to 170-4 when he was bowled by Alan Bauer for 28.
Three wickets fell in quick succession with veteran Geoff Brain running out of partners with the score on 188-8. Brain found this partner in Ben Pearson as Yelverton rocketed past maximum batting points to end on 248-9 with Brain falling to Roger Putman four short of his half century leaving Pearson on 22 not out. The pick of the Stokeinteignhead bowlers was Bauer with three wickets and Longrigg and Putman took two wickets a piece.
Stokeinteignhead’s innings got off to a poor start when Lojszczyk dismissed Paul Russell for two. West then reduced Stokeignteignhead to 39-4 taking three quick wickets. The only notable score being Presst’s 19.
Replacing Lojszczyk, seamer Hadleigh Scott-Kirk’s accuracy was soon rewarded by picking up the wicket of Longrigg while Daniel Farnham dismissed Stokeinteignhead captain Mark Russell off a sharp catch from West.
Number four bat Michael Lang managed to push the score along to 108-7 before partner Putman was superbly ran-out by Henry Webster. Ollie Barnes came in to score a brief 16 before being bowled by Hobbs. The final two wickets were picked up by Dan Keylock with Stokeignteignhead finishing on 137 all out.
Lang almost carried his bat through only to be dismissed on 43. The pick of the Yelverton bowlers was West with three wickets for a miserly nine runs off his nine overs.
Yelverton’s victory earned them 20 points and Stokeinteignhead salvaged seven from a resounding defeat.
