TEAMS from Tavistock, Staddon Heights, Yelverton, Bigbury and Thurlestone competed in the annual West Devon League adult and junior four ball better ball competition by Tavistock Golf Club.
The home team, a nearly all family affair, of mother Marion Stenhouse and son Will, father Keith and Sam Jessop had an excellent score of 87 to win the shield - helped with a back nine of 28 points from Marion and Will. In second place were Staddon Heights with 84 pts and third with 81 were Dartmouth.
The ladies held their 4BBB event with away teams taking the top places. With 85pts were the winning team from Bude and in second were Stover on 81. The Tavistock pair of Hilary Picton and Veronika Haydon-Foster together with Karen Preston and Chris Spier from China Fleet took third place with 80. The best visitor team were from Okehampton were S Williams, J Thawaites, A Brokenbrow and V Dodworth scoring 73. With 74 pts were the best Tavistock team of Fran Horton, Sybil Cole, Dawn Dennis and Margaret Burn. The best front nine with 42pts were Gloria Westhead, Marilyn Allen, Elizabeth Holmes and Peggy Burge from Tavistock.
In the men's John Porter medal and County Golfer Lee Zillwood topped division one with a nett 68 on countback from Gary Foster; third was Mike Wakeley with nett 70. In division two Graham Kelly won with nett 70, second Graham Dennis nett 71 and third was John Thewlis with nett 73. With an excellent nett 65 Nigel Scott was first in division three, second Darren Sturman nett 73 and with a nett 74 was Stuart Cox.
In the Alpha Romeo and Fullers Challenge scoring was close. In division one Nigel Doidge had nett 67 closely followed by Duncan File with nett 68 and, in third place, was Lee Zillwood with nett 70. Nigel Scott in division two won with a nett 67; second, on countback from Rob Staniland, was Dave Symons with nett 71. A nett 67 won Joe Fitzgerald division three; second with a nett 69 was Stuart Cox and third was Tony Falconer with a nett 70.
Winner of the Alpha Romeo was Nigel Doidge.
