Heather Fell, Olympic silver medallist, writes about her life in the media and sports world.
MY productivity has just fallen through the floor — the Olympics have begun. Time management is essential right now, scheduling in several hours of TV viewing while acting on my heightened motivation to do more sport is a healthy challenge. Do not get me wrong, this is not a problem I am complaining about for one moment!
Great Britain’s medals have started to roll in and that carnival feeling really is lapping at our shores. It has taken me some time to join the building Olympic wave of excitement, partly due to spending a relaxing week switching off in Cornwall. However, I am now literally on my way to Rio de Janeiro to join the world’s greatest sporting event.
Ironically I have struggled to pack by bags and prepare for this trip to Brazil due to the brilliant distraction of these games. This will be the forth consecutive Olympics that I have attended, each in a different capacity and all special in their unique way. In Athens I attended as a young upcoming modern pentathlete on holiday as a GB supporter; Beijing I competed, London I was part of the BBC commentary team and now I am going as the English Ground announcer. There maybe no physical requirements for me but the experience is still closely comparable to that as an athlete. The last few years I have been working towards selection and grabbed every opportunity to demonstrate my knowledge of the sport and my commentary skills. This was followed by the suspense as I waited for my contract to be confirmed and flights to be booked. The training for the big day and the buzz in the build up again has that familiar feeling.
I cannot wait to perform my roll and be part of another Olympic Games. Rio here I come!
