Callington Town 5

Stoke Gabriel 1

AFTER 140 days without football at home, this day was long in the waiting and in the end Callington proved too good for their opponents.

Once the club had honoured with a minute’s silence, local supporter Keith Conium who died recently, the two sides set about getting used to the pitch and it was the home side who showed first and took the lead on 23 minutes. Luke Avis Riordhan won the ball on the right wing and his cross was met well by Will Sargent who shot powerfully home.

Seven minutes before the break another agood move ended with Ben Langton firing home to give the Cornishmen a 2-0 lead at the break.

Early in the second half Callington had a penalty appeal turned down for a deliberate block in the area. However, Avis Riordhan extended their lead even further on 55 minutes. Ollie Caplin reduced the arrears for the Devon side on 71 minutes but 90 seconds later Ryan Lucassi scored at the other end to restore the three goal advantage.

As Stoke pressed gaps opened up and eight minutes from time, a poor clearance from their keeper saw the ball land at the feet of Langton some 40 yards out and he controlled before launching a looping ball back over the keeper and into the net to complete the scoring for the Marshmen.

Callington Town 4

Gunnislake 0

CALLINGTON third team returned to the top of the league with a hard fought 4-0 win over local rivals Gunnislake as football finally returned to Marsh two.

Town took the lead mid way through the first half when Liam Bryant’s cross on the right was headed powerfully home by Liam Gatcum. They increased their lead just before the break when Dan Ashman was upended in the box and Kieran Prescott converted the spot kick.

In the second half, Callington continued to press and Ashman turned goal scorer on the hour when he was first to react to an initial shot that rebounded off the keeper. Aiden Bryant was indebted to his older brother Liam late on when the youngster converted a great cross to head past the keeper.
