WITHERIDGE 2
OKEHAMPTON ARGYLE 1
OKEHAMPTON Argyle deserved a point or even a win as they were denied three penalty decisions in a tight affair at Edge Down Park. Argyle had finished one place above Witheridge last season so a close affair was expected.
Against the run of play the home side went a goal up 20 minutes into the first half but an excellent piece of cutting inside and curling the shot into the top corner from Steve Madge saw Okehampton deservedly back in the game and the visitors were upbeat for the second half.
Okehampton then fell behind to a Witheridge set piece at 55 minutes when they left the far post unguarded and a player unmarked who then scored with a header.
Argyle had reasons to believe that they should have got at least a point or even a victory and were disappointed to have three penalty appeals turned down by the referee – although Witheridge also had a penalty appeal turned down in the first half when their striker was pushed in the area.
Argyle’s man of the match was Matthew Mortimer with solid defending at the back especially in the air often finding Witheridge’s long ball easy to deal with.
