PUPILS from Chagford Primary School enjoyed finding their way with an orienteering and navigation class earlier this month.
Teacher Nia Thorpe took her years 5 and 6 (Miro class) to Kes Tor. Joined by further staff Rhys Evans and Rachael Ansell this was a finale to their introduction to navigation and orienteering. Mountaineer and event organiser John Baker, who kindly gave his time, set out an eight point course for the children to find, and spoke to them about the skills required when navigating and walking on the moor.
The five groups plotted and mapped their way from point to point were fortunate to be accompanied by Chris Chapman, the Dartmoor photographer and historian, and Jed Chapman, of Okehampton College sixth form, a former student of Chagford Primary and veteran of two Ten Tors, to guide and advise them further.
Chagford School John Waddell, Jackie Brown, Marion Stanbury and Chris Mount for their help in making the day possible. They also thank Gidleigh Park Hotel who sponsored the whole activity. Plans are already being made for the events further development for the Autumn of 2013.
