Lamerton 1

Torpoint 1

LAMERTON took control of the game from early on. They looked comfortable in possession with Torpoint's back four struggling to cope with the movement from home forwards James Steer and Simon Kelly.

Lamerton took a well deserved lead in the 23rd minute when a lofted ball from James Steer from 40 yards found its way to Phil Wearing inside Torpoint's penalty area. Wearing  from 15 yards out calmly chipped the ball over the goalkeeper into the net. Lamerton should have extended their lead a few minutes later when Simon Kelly delivered a free kick from the right byline which gave James Steer a chance from six yards out but his headed effort went agonisingly wide of the Torpoint goal.

Lamerton started the brighter of the two sides in the second half and had chances to put the game beyond Torpoint. In the 53rd minute James Steer was denied again when his effort from six yards was cleared off the goal-line.

Minutes later Steer beat two Torpoint defenders inside the box, played a ball across the six yard box to Phil Wearing who had the goal at his mercy. But his effort came crashing off the underside of the crossbar and was then cleared to safety by Torpoint.

Torpoint began to dominate possession in the latter stages of the second half pushing Lamerton deeper and deeper into thier own half.  But the home sides defence stood firm with centre half pairing Chris Wearing and Steve Lake working tirelessly to keep Torpoint at bay.

Lamerton goalkeeper Pete Daniel produced an outstanding save to deny Torpoint with just minutes left. But in the third minute of stoppage time Lamerton were denied all three points when Torpoint were awarded a penalty after Chris Wearing brought down Torpoint striker Tom Rothwell in the box.  Rothwell made no mistake to break Lamerton hearts.

Lamerton 6

Plymouth Rangers 1

IN this first round match Lamerton took an early lead when Alex Mayne cut in from the left wing, ghosted past his marker and struck a well-placed shot from the edge of the penalty area that landed neatly into the far corner of the Rangers' goal.

Lamerton doubled their lead in the 18th minute when Blair Vanstone sped down the right wing, crossed to Simon Kelly who slotted the ball into the net from six yards.

Lamerton's central midfield pair of Richard Searle and Mike King worked tirelessly throughout to break up any threatening attacks from Rangers. On the half hour Lamerton handed the away side a lifeline when a poor back pass from Steve Lake and miss kick from keeper Pete Daniel meant Rangers scored into an open goal.

Ross Hann scored his first goal since his return to Lamerton early in the second half and the home side dominated from then on. James Steer made it four after good work from right back Alan Doidge. Alex Mayne scored his second and Lamerton's fifth with just a few seconds left on the clock and a free kick from Doidge found James Steer who headed home for his second, finishing the match a comfortable 6-1 win for Lamerton.

KMD Development Knockout Cup, first round

St Mawgan 1

Lamerton 2

LAMERTON began the game well but in the tenth minute a loose pass between Alan Doidge and Paul Breyley in their defence allowed the home side to mount their first attacking opportunity and St Mawgan's veteran striker James Olsen put his side ahead from ten yards out.

Lamerton upped their game, Phil and Chris Wearing constantly threatening down the left wing, creating several opportunities which were thwarted by poor finishing and good defending from St Mawgan. Lamerton drew level in the 28th minute when James Steer jinked his way down the left into the penalty area and passed the ball to Simon Kelly, who unleashed a superb shot from 18 yards that drifted past the goalkeeper into the corner of the net.

Five minutes later Lamerton got their second when Richard Searle picked the ball up in centre midfield, slipped a perfect pass to Steer who sent the visitors into the lead with a short from 12 yards out.

Lamerton found it hard to settle in the second half as St Mawgan pressed desperately for a goal.

However, resolute defending from Paul Breyley and a great last ditch tackle in stoppage time from Steve Lake saw Lamerton home and into the second round.
