FORMER Tavistock Athletic Club runner Jo Meek likes a good challenge and she, once again, certainly rose to the occasion with a race in South Africa. Jo earned a gold medal after completing the Comrades ultimate human race earlier this month at Pietermaritzburg and 56 miles (89km) and later finished in Durban. The running race has been going for 89 years and has a huge following. A stupendous 18,000 people entered and around 14,000 finished within the cut off time. Jo, aged 37 and who now lives in Hampshire, raced it for the first time finishing in 6hrs 47mins and came fifth which won her an internationally recognised top 10 position and a coveted gold medal. She told Times Sport: 'The race is unlike any other. Crowds line the whole route and so the support was incredible from dawn until dusk.' The indefatigable runner has now set her sets on her next challenge — a mountain marathon in Chamonix (Mount Blanc) in France followed by the Lakeland 50 which is the GB Trail running champs.
