THE Okehampton squash teams had contrasting fortunes in the latest round of matches.
While the first team went down to a heavy defeat away at Torquay in the Devon Mixed league three, the second team fought out a match needed win away to Exeter University in league .
In the first team match Tom Parson at string five played against a strong player and, despite some good rallies, lost 0-3. Dan Yeoman at string four had a close game and eventually just lost out 2-3 against an old sparring partner.
Justin Gliddon at string three came up against an opponent playing with good consistency and went down 0-3. At string two Phil Allin had some good rallies but eventually lost 1-3. In the second team match, Tom Wilkens, who was making his debut for the team at string five, fought back from two games down to eventually win 3-2. Dave Harwood, who was struggling with the effects of illness, found it hard going in his string four match, losing 0-3.
At string three Stuart Lord continued to find it difficult to gain a foothold on the match and also went down 0-3. In the string two match Shane Vallance played with good variation and length to win 3-1. This meant the match depended on Shawn Jones in the string one match and, after a number of lengthy rallies, Shawn’s greater consistency and mobility eventually won out 3-1. Therefore, a solid 3-2 win and a 14-8 point victory.
