OCTOBER for Tamar and Tavy Gig Club is all about the endurance races. It held its annual regatta on October 1 — a handicapped race from the club base at Weir Quay on the River Tamar to the Brunel Bridge and back again.

The event is a vital fundraising opportunity for the club and so members were delighted to be over subscribed this year with 12 boats competing. The weather was good and bad often at the same time with rainbows frequently appearing overhead.

Tamar and Tavy crews did well in securing sixth and 11th place and initiating several new members into the world of racing.

Two weeks later the club participated in the Tamar Challenge held by Cotehele Gig Club — this time rowing nine miles from Saltash to Cotehele in torrential rain.

It was an incredibly hard, long race and for the new members Tamar and Tavy had in its two mixed crews, a real trial and a testament to them that they rowed on through it with the best of them.

The club has a lot to be proud of this year and with the season coming to a close it is all looking forward to winter training and preparing for another year of achievements.
