Devon one
North Tawton 20
South Moulton 17
THIS rugby game was a scrappy stop start affair which in truth never got going. North Tawton’s cause was not helped by the loss of their stand in scrum half Brendon Cooper with a shoulder injury Brendon leaving the field after only 15 minutes, with Ryan Goss taking over the duties for the rest of the match.
Tawton knew they must win this match to stand any chance of avoiding the drop and then still hope Totnes come up short in their fixture at Exeter Saracens.
South Moulton began tieing the game up in the middle of the park to frustrate the home side.
A penalty by Dave Fewings put Tawton 3-0 up and then he went one better and scored the first try of the afternoon with the extras making it 10-0.
However, South Moulton hit back with a try of their own and a missed conversion to make the half-time score 10-5 in Tawton’s favour.
The second half started with the visitors down to 14 men after one was sent off for a high tackle but they scored their second try, and another missed conversion, to make it 10-10.
Another penalty to North Tawton by Dave Fewings made it 13-10.
South Moulton came back to take the lead with a try, after some powerful driving, and a conversion for 13-17.
North Tawton showed their character and showed they were not going to lie down without a fight. From the restart they went steaming up the pitch and get what turns out to be for the winning try from Dave Fewings; Alex Dennis adding the extras final score for the final score of 20 17.
This was a hard fought win by North Tawton but unfortunately for all concerned at the club it was not enough to keep them up as Totnes won at Saracens — so Tawts drop down to Devon two for next season . One of the main factors is that North Tawton experienced a high number of injuries for such a small squad which stifled any momentum throughout the season.
