THE Shebbear College U18s rugby sevens team travelled to the HSBC National Schools Sevens competition at Rosslyn Park on March 21.

In their first game, against Lancaster Boys Grammar School, Shebbear took the lead and were winning at half time 21-0 thanks to tries from Will C-D and Will C. However, they became complacent in the second half and a silly mistake in the dying moments meant Lancaster scored a winning try. They then went on to lose against Cheltenham College.

With qualification from the group as winners now impossible, the pressure was off and they were focusing on a second place finish. Against Bassaleg School from Wales, Shebbear looked comfortable and scored two good opening tries through prop Jabez W. Shebbear went on to win 47-24, and this game allowed them to rest some of their starting players. Zoltan W, Jake W and Ryan S came off the bench and made a good impact on the result.

Against Trent College it was a classic game in which the lead changed hands four times before Shebbear were two points ahead as the final whistle blew, Alessandro A, Will B and Captain Siaosi T were tremendous throughout.

Shebbear’s player of the tournament was Will B. It was an excellent performance from all involved and they ended up finishing in joint second place in their group, a remarkable effort for a school of their size.
