Tavistock Community FC Under-18s took on Plymouth side Railway Beacon on Sunday in the semi-final of the Devon Cup – and won.

The competition is competed for by teams from across the county with Tavistock getting down to the last with a 4-1 win against Elburton Villa in the quarter-finals.

In a tough game played in blustery conditions, the early exchanges were pretty even until Tavistock broke away to score an early goal through Billy Spry to settle the nerves.

Some good exchanges from both sides saw chances at either end with Fynn Hall in goal for Tavistock called into action with a couple of great near post saves.

On the half-hour, Sam Brereton laid the ball wide to George McLaughlin who played a measured pass into Luke Tyler who broke free from the chasing defenders to put Tavistock two up.

Just two minutes later and Tyler scored again to give Tavistock a healthy 3-0 lead heading towards half-time.

With minutes to go before the break, Tavistock struggled to clear the ball from defence and from outside the penalty area, Railway Beacon struck a long range effort into the top corner to set up an interesting second half.

The second half was much closer with both sides coming close and some great midfield battles marshalled by Charlie Bulley (captain) and Haydn Halfyard for Tavistock.

With minutes to go, Luke Tyler chased down what looked like a lost cause, just getting to the ball ahead of the keeper to score and complete his hat-trick.

Tavistock manager Jay Brereton commented: ‘I think I was more nervous than the players this morning!

‘They did themselves proud after a tough quarter final with a real team effort and more than deserve their place in the final on today’s performance.’

Winning 4-1, Tavistock move onto the final against Torquay United being played at Devon FA HQ in Newton Abbot.

Congratulations to all the lads and best wishes in the final.

Man of the match for Tavistock: Matt Daniel.
