WITH the season now well underway at Tavistock Golf Club, both the junior and men's veterans sections had a good start to their events.
The juniors, for the second year running, won the annual West Devon Junior Golf League junior/organiser event at Yelverton.
Young players from Yelverton, Bigbury, Thurlestone, Wrangaton, Staddon Heights and Dartmouth took part with Tavistock entering two teams. The Tavistock teams of Chris and Mike Henderson and Keith and Will Stenhouse, with a combined scored of 76 points, beat Bigbury on countback with Thurlestone on 74pts.
The men's vets held their successful open. 184 players from 24 clubs ranging from West Cornwall to East Somerset played in this popular annual event on a course in superb condition with the added bonus of sunshine and blue skies! Topping the long prize list of winners were, for the home team, Paul Whitby and Kevin Northcote with 42pts and the winning visitor team with 41pts were Chester Barnes and Chris Coles from Churston. The highlight of the day was a hole in one by David Kelly from Yelverton. .
There was some close scoring in the mens Alpha Romeo Medal. Mark Taylor in division one had a nett 71 on countback from Rich Potts, third was Nigel Doidge nett 72. Graham Dennis had a nett 71 in division two on countback from Will Spearing. In division three Roger Short had nett 70 on countback from Frank Hughes.
In the men's Shotgun Foursomes John Hayward and Mike Roper had a nett 69.5; second Phil Eastham and Bob Small nett 70.
Scoring was close in the mens' three ball team event medal but with a nett 137 Barry Gurney, Garry Foster and Paul Stewart were first closely followed by Nick Coe, Alan Gawman and Kenny Mackenzie with nett 138 on countback from Mike Henderson, Keith Stenhouse and Will Stenhouse.
In the Lombard Trophy Stableford Mark Taylor topped division one with 38pts on countback from Andy Hick with Tim Hawkins on 37pts. Ed Smith had an excellent 41 pts in division two; second was Darren Sturman with 39pt. With 36pts Dan Pratley was first in division three with 36 pts and second Jas Singh with 35pts.
The ladies have also had an equally busy time. In the Warren Crocus Stableford Maggie Hillman in division one had 34pts, second Kayleigh Cann with 32 pts on countback from Belinda McSherry. In division two Sam Avens scored 31 pts, second Marion Stenhouse with 30pts. Joy Harrison in division three had 30pts with Val Jarman second on 27pts. Maggie and Belinda together with Sam and Marion will represent Tavistock in the final at Warren Dawlish. The Marilyn Allen Trophy, for past lady captains, was played in conjunction with an England Golf Medal. Kayleigh Cann was first with nett 74, second Gail Reed nett 75. Pat Hoar won the trophy with a nett 80.
In the Coronation Foursomes the winners were Wendy George and Alison West with the superb score of 44pts. Runners up were Marion Stenhouse and Gail Reed with 39 pts. Georgie and Alison will represent Tavistock in the final at Launceston.
The competition for the Alice Rose Bowl was played in perfect golfing weather.
In division one Dawn Phillott had 36pts with in second Shirley Trevenna with 35pts. Gail Reed scored 38pts in division two and in second Marion Stenhouse on 36pts. In division three Ann Dawson scored 39pts to win the trophy.
