LOCAL girls' rugby clubs gathered in Tavistock for a three-team U18s and U15s tournaments.

Exeter Saracens brought full teams for both tournaments. Tavistock combined with Newquay, and Wellington, Taunton and Liskeard formed the third team.

In the Tavistock U18s against Saracens U18s game with the strong wind behind them, Exeter soon ran in three tries.

However, Tavistock came back with power of their forwards, Beth Hodgkiss, Amber Barnicoat and Bronwyn Rundle, allowing tries from Annabel Longden and Lauren Dawe.

In the second half, tired Tavistock legs allowed the Saracens to break through twice to seal an easy win.

Against Liskeard et al, the Tavistock U18s ran determinedly through the churned up mud and soon outflanked the amalgamation of clubs' team.

Good running and hard tackling led to a total of six Tavistock tries, three by Annabel Longden, two by Lauren Dawe and one by captain Flo Rodgers.

The pick of the tries, at the beginning of the second half, saw the ball gathered on the 22 by Chloe Tresidder and after several off loads, it ended in the hands of Kaitlyn Bridge, who passed to Lauren Dawe to score.

Tavistock U18s won 36-0.

The Tavistock U15s team used the strength of the wind to kick the ball into safety against Exeter Saracens. But with Saracens' Devon County outside centre who towered over the rest she powered her way through the defence to score twice as Tavistock lost 20-5.

Against Liskeard and others Tavistock U15s put together two well worked tries by Lilly Mills and Alice Mills-Hicks. In both matches, newcomers Anna Powell, Eleanor Mills, Ellen and Lauren Abel and Rosie Crosby all played solid parts in the games. Jessica Tait played well after returning from a long injury. All the games were entertaining and the play is highly skilled. Many of the girls will be in county trials next week and others will progress to divisional teams.

n Any girl who would like to join Tavistock girls U18s or U15s are welcomed at their training on Thursdays, 6pm at Tavistock Rugby Club.
