Whitchurch v Dartington and Totnes
WHITCHURCH lost their third game in a row when they faced top of the table Dartington and Totnes.
Having won the toss and deciding to bowl Whitchurch's first few overs were sloppy but Charlie Barriball (3-25) picked up two quick wickets for the home side, setting the visitors back to 44-3.
Whitchurch began to squeeze but a good innings from Cook, who batted superbly for his 79, put on 139 for the fourth wicket with Veale who also batted well for his 68. That partnership put the home side on the back foot until C Barriball returned to the attack and picked up the wicket of Cook. Bone (2-50) finally got Veale caught at mid off after a few chances went begging. Towl (3-24) mopped up the tail and the away side were restricted to 219 all out, which was very achievable on a good pitch and small ground.
Whitchurch's run chase began in disastrous fashion though losing Towl second ball of the game to Gornell (2-35) and then fellow opener Credicott also out without troubling the scorers in the second over.
Charlie Barriball made a quick 30 before he fell victim to Gornell. Billy Barriball was then run out for 19 and Smith went just a few balls later for 0 as he was trapped lbw by Baxendale (2-39).
Whitchurch found themselves 54-5. Rob Bone and Sherrell looked to get Whitchurch to a reasonable total with Sherrell making a brisk 29 before being bowled by Baxendale. Bone and Nigel Barriball looked like they could win the game for the Wayfarers, needing five an over from the last 12 but when they both fell victim to Cook (3-16) the game was all but done, N Barriball fell for 31 chipping back to Cook and Bone edged him to the keeper for 34. Cook picked up the final wicket to see his side win by 30 runs and keep them at the top of the table.
