FRIDAY, September 30 saw the last cadet sail of the season for Weir Quay Sailing Club. It was a beautiful evening which saw 19 club boats take to the water.
The conditions were not ideal though with light winds, but everyone was able to make it down river to the free sail area and the reeds of the Tamar. Much fun was had navigating the sail boats through the islands of reeds, the wind dropped even more than previously and several of the boats had to be towed back to the hard. After all the boats were put away, notices of further events were read out, including notice of the end of cadets party and prize giving.
The end of season party took place on Friday, October 7, at Bere Ferrers Village Hall. The evening consisted of an informal quiz with questions including boating terminology and some joke questions, the winning team scored 29 out of a possible 39 points.
The club’s Steve Kirby then asked the WQSC president Robin Venables to present the prizes, which were as follows: Attendance: Under 18s Sam Madar; Over 18 Chris Fillan; most improved sailor Under 18 Jake Hambley, Over 18 Gary Strong. Best overall cadet: Billy Wilkinson.
A special award was made to Adam Hambley by the Commodore Graham Reed.
A vote of thanks and some small gifts were given by some of the teenage members of the club to all the instructors, rescue boat crew and members gave a special thanks to Steve Kirby for all his tireless effort in keeping the Friday sessions afloat.
